Chapter Twenty-Two

Ashmarah’s computer blinked, calling her away from Isa piecing a puzzle on the floor. She opened the transmission and read Procias’ final report. The words struck her heart with grief. Ashmarah uttered a silent prayer for Teroma.

Agent 47,

Preparations in Orareca are complete. I’ll be leaving to go underground. Our worst fears have been confirmed. Habbada and Lib forces have teamed with the Ressogureys once again. It’s likely a final flotilla from the Archo system will join too. It will not be long before they attack Teroma in a coordinated assault like none in the history of our planet.

I pray for your mission to be a success, not only for the sake of our existence, but also for my daughter. I know it’s against protocol, but please look after Kameclara the best you can. I can only hope to see her again in another life.

Regards,

Agent 39

Ashmarah deleted the message and shut off her computer. She sat quietly for a moment, absorbing what it meant for Teroma. All top officers and observers knew the journey to Jema absolutely could not fail. Not only did the survival of their species depend upon it, but it was also unlikely they’d have a home to return to.

Hands quaked as Ashmarah clutched them over her chest. The Pinghe teaming up with the few remaining Intergalactic Military teams on Teroma were not going to be enough. Countless trillions would lose their lives. The miserable truth remained that it was the better of two dire options. The Teromans were backed into a corner this time. Their current mission to the inner planets was the last resort.

She glanced to Isa who was unaware of her aunt’s change in mood. “Ia, please protect us all,” she prayed under her breath.

Captain Nanti finished her work and slid the pullout desk into the wall of her office, trading for legroom. Her emotionless gray walls were soundproof, providing a sense of security. Having survived countless risky missions, the feeling of security was something she didn’t take for granted.

Fingers tapped lightly on her favorite mug as her thoughts dwelled on that morning’s briefing. The warships were on schedule, expected to enter Ima’s orbit within a few months. Activity on the planet showed they’d been preparing for the Teromans’ arrival. Though Iman technology and magic couldn’t match the Teroman fleet’s firepower, the sheer number of soldiers and civilians caused concern.

Vesper had taken Calio and Songbird five and four years ago, respectively. Seu had been under siege for two. Their defenses held without fail, as they were designed to do, but even they couldn’t last forever under Vesper’s brutal magic.

Captain Nanti dragged a hand along her cheek, breathing a flustered sigh. Upon the Teroman’s arrival to Ima, Jema would be on the opposite side of the sun. Their original plan had always been to land on Ima before heading to Seu. There had been slim hopes of subduing Vesper before she reached Jema.

Now they resorted to the alternate plan. Seu would continue to hold their own as the Teromans disabled her troops on Ima.
